How to perform a SIM card swap.

This article will provide step by step instructions on how to swap a SIM card in a Wellaware unit and how to update the card in the Wellaware Field App.

Wellaware has upgraded the single carrier SIM cards to a multi-carrier SIM card which can connect to multiple cellular providers.  Wellaware will issue multi-carrier SIM cards as needed to upgrade from the single carrier to improve cellular signal and ultimately provide consistent data.  Please follow these steps to swap out the SIM card.

  1. Disconnect power to the Wellaware unit.  If your unit is connected to AC 120v power, unplug the unit from the power source.  If your unit is connected to DC 12v power, disconnect the power cable to the battery in the battery box.
  2. Open the Wellaware unit and ensure the green LED at the top left corner is OFF.  This is to ensure no power is coming in to the unit.
  3. Locate the existing SIM card inside the unit, typically this will be directly below the Telit chip, as seen in green below.  This is the LOCKED position of the SIM card cage.  NOTE:  Depending on your unit model, the SIM card location may slightly vary. SIM1
  4. To unlock the SIM card cage, with your finger, slide the cage to the left and now the cage is unlocked.  Do be careful, as the SIM card is now loose and may fall out of the opened SIM card cage.  In green below shows the SIM card cage in the unlocked position. SIM2
  5. Once you remove your SIM card from the unit be sure to hold on to it!  You will need it again shortly. 
  6. Remove your new SIM card from the new SIM card holder seen below.Sim4-2
  7. Once you have removed your new SIM card place it in the SIM card cage inside the unit.  NOTE:  The SIM cards are keyed, the notch needs to be at the top right corner, seen below.

  8. Next, close the cage and slide it to the right to put it in the locked position.
  9. Reconnect power to the unit.
  10. Open your Wellaware Field App and log into the unit and go to the NETWORK icon.Network
  11. Once in NETWORK choose SWAP SIM, you will receive a warning ensuring that the physical card swap has been done.  Be sure you have swapped the SIM cards physically before doing the swap on the Field app.
  12. After SWAP SIM is chosen you will be taken to a new screen asking to SELECT SIM.  Choose TEAL USA.  NOTE: Teal cards do not work in Canada.

  13. Now choose SWAP SIM and you will receive a notification to reboot and swap, choose YES.  The unit will now reboot and change over to the multi-carrier SIM card.
  14. Finally, get your empty new SIM card holder and write the unit serial number on it.  Next place the old SIM card you pulled out of the unit on top of the card and take a picture as seen below and send to clientsuccess@wellaware.us.  Be sure the bar code on the new SIM card holder is showing and the numbers on the old SIM card are also showing.oldsimcardnew

  15. You have now completed a SIM card swap.  Once you send the picture above, you do not need to keep any of the cards, they can be discarded.
